The ancient Mayan culture are noted for their amazing achievements in architecture, engineering and science. Around 1000 years ago they built impressive cities and ceremonial centers here in the Yucatan peninsula. Many monuments are still standing today.

Some of the most famous archaeological sites in the Mayan World are very close to Playa del Carmen, for example Tulum, Coba and Chichen Itza. There are even small ruins in downtown Playa del Carmen and in Playacar. You will also see some ancient coastal outposts from your boat when you go diving.
